Who runs LoLGuessr

LoLGuessr is a fan project run by Jan Ouborny, who is responsible for the data described here (the “controller” under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR).

Your anonymous ID

On your first visit the site sets one cookie, id. It holds 24 random characters that don't contain or reveal anything about you, and it expires after a year. The ID lets the site:

• show your ranked guesses on the Guess history page,
• count each vote on a match only once,
• skip matches you've already guessed.

Include it when you contact us about your data. It's the only way to find your guesses, because we don't know who you are.

LoLGuessr sets no other cookies: none for analytics, advertising or tracking.

Your ranked guesses

When you lock in a pick on a ranked match, our server saves:

• which match it was,
• the team you picked, red or blue,
• whether you were right,
• the date and time,
• your anonymous ID.

Your pick is also added to the match's community vote count, which everyone sees after guessing. The count is only a number and doesn't show who voted.

The Guess history page works out your stats from these guesses. To group them by day, it sends your browser's time zone name, like Europe/Berlin, with the request. The time zone isn't saved.

Guesses are kept for as long as LoLGuessr runs, unless you ask for them to be deleted. Clear history on the Guess history page gives your browser a new ID. Your old guesses stay on the server under the old ID and still count in the community votes, but nothing links them to your browser any more. The same happens when the cookie expires or you delete it.

Stored only in your browser

Everything else stays on your device, in your browser's local storage, and isn't saved on our server:

To load the eSports tab of the Guess history, the page sends the IDs of the matches in esportsHistory to our server, which returns their details without keeping the list.

Clear history on each tab of the Guess history deletes the saved guesses or rounds. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings deletes all of it, the id cookie included.

Hosting and server logs

The website runs on the network of Cloudflare, Inc. (USA). Like any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address, your browser's details and the pages you request, and uses them to deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks. If a page fails to load, your browser may send Cloudflare a short error report. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Matches and guesses are kept on our server at Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany. The pages talk to it from Cloudflare's network, not from your browser, so it never sees your IP address. It logs each request with the time, the address requested (which can include your anonymous ID) and the result, so we can find and fix errors. The log holds at most 10 MB, and older lines are deleted as new ones come in. See Hetzner's privacy policy.

Champion images from Riot Games

Champion portraits load straight from Riot Games' image server, ddragon.leagueoflegends.com. Your browser connects to it directly, so Riot Games, Inc. (USA) receives your IP address and browser details. See Riot's privacy notice.

Team logos, fonts and everything else come from lolguessr.com itself.

Players in the matches

The ranked matches are real games from Riot Games' official API, and the data Riot provides includes each player's Riot ID. The site doesn't display Riot IDs. It shows champions, items, ranks and in-game stats.

The eSports games come from public records of Worlds and MSI and show the professional players' names, as the broadcasts and results pages do.

If you played in one of the ranked matches and want it removed, write to privacy@lolguessr.com with your Riot ID.

Legal bases

• Saving your guesses, the server logs and loading the champion images: our legitimate interest in running the game, counting votes fairly, showing your history and keeping the site working and secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
• Setting the id cookie and using your browser's local storage: strictly necessary for the features you use (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG, the German law on storing information on your device).
• Showing real matches with their players: our legitimate interest in a game built on real games (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
• Cloudflare and Hetzner host the site on our behalf (Art. 28 GDPR). Transfers to Cloudflare in the USA rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Art. 45 GDPR).

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to see the data stored about you (Art. 15), have it corrected (Art. 16) or deleted (Art. 17), restrict how it's used (Art. 18) and get a copy of it (Art. 20). Because we rely on legitimate interest, you can also object to the processing at any time (Art. 21).

Write to privacy@lolguessr.com and include your anonymous ID from above. Without it we can't tell which guesses are yours.

You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular the one in the EU country where you live (Art. 77 GDPR).

Changes to this policy

When the site starts storing something new, this page changes first. The date at the top shows the last update.
